The best are ones with simple stories in japanese with the english side by side and vocabulary and grammar explanations.
The grammar really isn’t very complicated most things follow the rules. It’s learning the Kanji that takes the most time when it comes to reading. Though it isn’t really that hard it’s just a matter of memorization mostly if you read and write it a lot you’ll remember it..
I’m currently trying to teach myself as well. What I do is study from the books Japanese in Manga Land, Kanji Pictographix, and a Japanese-English Dictionary. I use social language learning websites to talk to people who know Japanese and we help each other.
get Byki ! it’s a free language learning program. I’ve used it to learn Japanese and it works reeeeally well. you’ll learn both words and sounds and it’s a fun challenge. you’ll be speaking Japanese in no time. when you do, drop me a line and we’ll have a convo in your new language!
