My 5 yr old nephew can read and write in English. I want him to be able to speak foreign languages and Spanish is the most practical. What programs would be good for a 5 yr old? I’d like to stick with books, cds and videos for now and see how that goes. He’s seems to love memorizing and learning
ok…I’m talking about a learning program. He doesn’t live around Hispanics and doesn’t have a nanny. The boy is only 5 yrs old and can’t be put with strangers.

Hi everyone. Here are some details. I’m 25 and almost finished with my internship to becoming a dietitian (6 months left). I have never travelled outside the US and I am dying to travel, learn spanish and live in another country. What I really would like to do is just move somewhere different directly after my internship to maybe…puerto rico, learn spanish and hopefully work in my profession ( i know they have the same system to becoming a dietitian thats why i say puerto rico) . This sounds really difficult, but I would like to do it. What I am worried about is that after all of my school i pretty much have no savings plus I will be an entry level dietitian…and not understand spanish. I have taken a couple of years of spanish in high school and am now listening to spanish cds during my commute. I know it would probably be smarter to work in my profession here in California where I live =P but i have the travel bug bad. Any advice, thoughts, suggestions would be helpful! thanks!

I’m hoping to live in Japan once I finish school. I bought myself a “Tech Yourself Japanese” set with book and audio CDs. Is it best for me to stick with this method of learning japanese first or will it be best for me to start teaching myself their written language right now? not romanji. I know for a fact I won’t be in a city or college setting for me to practice japanese with others for 2 years. I’m not as passionate as I used to be about the language. Sometimes I think of giving up and just switching back to spanish which I have come a ways in because I know how to relate new vocabulary back to something I’ve known for years but with japanese everything is new. Everything. All is welcome.
I know that if I could take up a Japanese class then I wouldn’t have this problem. I learn better in a classroom setting, by just listening. I will be going to a community college in January which offers no Japanese class, of course.

I really want to learn a few languages. Obvioulsy not fluently, but i want to get a good basis so that when i go to the country it will be easy for me to progress from there. I’ve done GCSE spanish which is pretty basic so it would be good to get other languages upto that level so that in my gap year i can hopfully get much better. My first question is what is the best/quickest way to learn a language. Do these discs and CDs that teach you actually work? If the answer is that the best way is to get a teacher, i can’t do that so please give the next best way.

Also, how many languages would be too much to be studying? Idealy what i want is:
German
Italian
French
Romanian
Hebrew

I know it would be insane to try them all at once, but i’m wondering what’s the most that would still be effective. I’ve got the whole summer to work on them!

I learned great Spanish grammar from high school courses, but I’d like to study abroad in Paris and want to learn French. Those HS courses never taught me to speak Spanish very well (but man, can I write an esay ;D). Do those cds and computer programs really work, or would they be a waste of money?
